They say it takes leaving home to find it And I can’t disagree But just in case I need to be reminded I try and tell my family American’s a state of mind I only find when I’m across the fence But it hits hard when there’s no yard To grill the chicken or the presidents Take me across the water One more time There’s afternoons that I can’t stay here Nights when I just couldn’t stand to leave I love the sunshine, love the rain But tell me, what about that autumn breeze? And when I say I’m going home Oh, I don’t know exactly what I mean But I did what I came here for It’s time I pack my things again and leave Take me across the water One more time We say that we’ll keep in touch But we both know what we won’t say is true: I’ll go my way, you go yours And in a year I’ll probably think of you But those are ugly words And they’re not fit for any kind of good goodbye It’s easier to hug and say “We’ll see each other on the other side.” Take me across the water One More Time

I thought after seven months Since the night I flew away I’d be happier without you I’d have so much less to say And though sometimes it’s easy Other nights I lay in bed Waiting for the sleep to settle California in my head. It was winter when I left you, and the mountains filled with snow, When I landed it was summer Where nothing doesn’t grow, I learned all about saudades In language and in heart But the right pronunciation Was not the hardest part. And I know I wanted this, And I know it’s been awhile But I still miss your California song, And your California smile. Found my way down to the ocean Let the water kiss my feet And I floated in the waves there As the sun began to sleep. In the current of the water My mind drifted back to you, Knowing he was still awake there, Watching water kiss you too. And I know I wanted this, And I know it’s been awhile But I still miss your California song, And your California smile. It’s not easy to remember I might not be here again, And I know that things are good now And they all come to an end. And I know I wanted this, And I know it’s been awhile But I still miss your California song, And your California smile.

Anyone can start to write a poem: “Roses red and dandelions die.” But another line and you gotta start to rhyme ‘em. I could finish, but I’d rather learn to fly. I don’t know where I learned to be a wanderer; They say I ran before I learned to walk. And lately I’ve been thinking there’s a reason We also cry before we learn to talk. You go your way and I’ll go mine We won’t notice the passing time Maybe eventually we will find a way to rhyme but for now You go your way and I’ll go mine You said that you needed me to tell you That I had made my mind up, I was gone. So in the moonlight driveway I told both of us That it was best if we’d just move along. ‘Cause baby, we were going through the motions (It’s easier to think that, anyway). Our houses, now, are built on different oceans, And I’m doing what I can to try and stay. You go your way and I’ll go mine We won’t notice the passing time Maybe eventually we will find a way to rhyme but for now You go your way and I’ll go mine The third time I lied was like the second: I said I could get on being friends. But I don’t think I could stand to see your wedding Unless I got to kiss you in the end. There’s not a lot of ways to end the story; I’m sure I’ll see you somewhere down the line. The only other ending I can think of: Won’t you be the little light of mine? I’ll go your way if you’ll go mine, And we won’t notice the years go by. Old together, we’ll have found a way to rhyme— but for now You go your way, and I’ll go mine. Yeah you go your way, and I’ll go mine.

Rain Rain 04:48
Rain rain, why’d you go away? I need you more than yesterday. You left me here with skies so blue, But I’m withering without you. Rain rain, I’ve been missing you, The memories of kissing you, My dirty face held toward the sky, You satisfied my lips so dry. Rain rain, won’t you come around And meet me on this dusty ground? I’m thirsty and I’m missing you, So bring me just a drop or two. I met you first when I was young And growing tender toward the sun. In afternoons you came and played; We danced around in thunder-shade. It always hurt to see you go, But I waited for the wind to blow, ‘Cause I knew you’d be on his tail; You always were, you never fail. Can’t help but think how it would be If you had never come to me I’d not have grown up half as tall, I’m bigger now but I’ll harder fall. I grew up thick and I grew up high, I didn’t even have to try. Now I’m standing on these brittle bones; You left me drying out alone. Now I’m out of breath my leaves are brown, The wind it makes a different sound. But if you don’t ride it back this way, Come again another day.

I should know better than to kiss you, I should know better than to hold your hand. I should know better than to stay the night, But it’s just what I have planned. Cause girl I’ve got it, I’ve got it bad, And you’re more than I can stand. I should know better than to kiss you, I should know better than to hold your hand. I should know better than to kiss you, I should know better than to hold your hand. I should know better than to stay the night, But it’s just what I have planned. Cause boy I’ve got it, I’ve got it bad, And you’re more than I can stand. I should know better than to kiss you, I should know better than to hold your hand. I should know better than to kiss you, I should know better than to hold your hand. I should know better than to stay the night, But it’s just what I have planned. And oh, I’ve got it, I’ve got it bad, And you’re more than I can stand. I should know better than to kiss you, I should know better than to hold your hand.

about

The Across the Water EP is a handful of songs first sung through an apartment window over the mango-lined streets of Brazil. In a moment in time where communication over distance is easier than ever imagined, the songs bend an ear toward the quieter, more fragile thoughts and feelings that don’t quite warrant a call or text.
